Families who are keen to include dance in their Christmas countdown but are looking for something slightly different should consider grooving with Hansel & Gretel at The Place.

Created by Uchenna Dance, this quirky modern remake of a much-loved tale follows the escapades of two courageous children who embark on an exciting journey and find themselves lost in London.

Overwhelmed by the sights, sounds and smells – and separated from their kind guardian – the duo must use their smarts and determination to outwit the adults. They follow London landmarks instead of breadcrumbs, and the evil witch is a (seemingly) helpful stranger. Will our two young heroes be able to reunite their little modern family?

The production is something of a milestone for The Place as this is the first time that a family show has been commissioned by this leading contemporary dance venue for the festive season.

Hansel & Gretel is also a momentous work for Uchenna Dance, as it is the company’s first ever family show.

Uchenna Dance, which was established in 2009, aims to empower, entertain and educate through dance. Its activities include creating dance theatre production pieces, coaching, providing dance-based empowerment workshops and teaching in further and higher education.

The founder of Uchenna Dance, Vicki Igbokwe, has worked with the writer Gbolahan Obisesan and the composer Kweku Aacht to realise the inventive new take on Hansel & Gretel. Her fierce movement vocabulary – a blend of House, Waacking, Vogue, African and Contemporary dance – will convey the story with a unique Uchenna twist.

Billed as a fearless dance adventure, this alternative festive treat promises to celebrate the endless imagination and resourcefulness of children with vivacious dancing and colourful costumes.
