Some of the best books by women for International Women's Day

Acquaint yourself with these female writers, and you'll make a friend for life in their books

Chapter One: Tove Jansson

Chapter One: Tove Jansson

Post-war picture books about the strange, gentle beasts that live in Moominland: Tove Jansson's stories preach a message of tolerance, understanding and love for women - including those in Jansson's own life: she was a lesbian in a time when it was illegal in her native Finland, which was under German occupation through WWII.

Long sotry short: we love the Moomins. And so does London: the city's been Moomin mad recently with a recent (but sadly now closed) Jansson retrospective at the Dulwich Picture Gallery and a lovely Moomin shop in Covent Garden.
