If you're looking for inspiration over Frieze London 2015, head to one of our favourites in the mesh of Mayfair galleries - Michael Werner's establishment on Upper Brook Street.
Michael Werner Gallery: Cologne to London
Werner was a high school dropout that made his name in Berlin as an assistant for the Rudolf Springer Gallery before setting up his own Galerie Michael Werner in Cologne in 1969. Now with galleries in New York and London, Werner represents some starry German names like Georg Baselitz and Sigmar Polke.
Michael Werner exhibition
For their major show timed alongside the Frieze art fair, Michael Werner Gallery gathers some spectacular figurative paintings and sculptures, from the early 20th century up to the present day. This exhibition delights in the different ways famous artists like Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, Peter Doig, Allen Jones and Francis Picabia have all used the human body as a significant motif in their work.
Highlights
Look out for Puvis de Chavannes' complex figures that may seem classical in their form, but were greatly influenced by modern simplicity and flatness. Another highlight are the postmodern, distorted and erotic kitsch paintings by the experimental French painter Picabia. We'll also be on the look out for the acclaimed Scottish artist Peter Doig whose melancholic, dreamy works inject new invention into contemporary painting.
If you're taking in the countless fantastic shows in central London this autumn, we recommend a pit stop at the Michael Werner Gallery.
