High Spirits: The Comic Art of Thomas Rowlandson, The Queen's Gallery

Cheeky caricaturist Thomas Rowlandson mocks life in Georgian England at The Queen's Gallery

Comedy Spectators by Thomas Rowlandson artist, 8 October 1789, The Queen's Gallery London
After sell out success at Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, this humour-filled show spotlighting the caricatures of Thomas Rowlandson touches down in at the Queen's Gallery in London.
Who was Thomas Rowlandson? Biography
A prolific social commentator, Rowlandson’s draughtsmanship is both precise and agile – an elegant and often acerbic examination of life at the turn of the 18th century. A brilliant study of anatomy and character, Rowlandson's pen sharply satirises the absurdities of fashion, Royal life, political machinations and the perils of love.
Thomas Rowlandson art & style
Working at a time when collectors across Europe prized English satirical prints, Rowlandson’s work was widely viewed in publications of the day. Originals were even collected by King George IV - ironically himself frequently the subject of the satirist’s nib.
With portly squires, young dandies and Jane Austen-esque heroines amongst Rowlandson’s keenly observed cast of characters, visitors will find both a sharp take on current affairs and deft humour in equal measure – an uplifting display well worth the visit to The Queen's Gallery.
