Cy Twombly, Gagosian Gallery

New Gagosian London gallery opens with spectacular paintings by Cy Twombly

Gagosian Gallery, Cy Twombly artist, “Untitled” from 2007
Tastemaker gallerist Larry Gagosian, who represents the likes of Jeff Koons, Takashi Kurakami and Anselm Kiefer, is setting up a brand new gallery in London (to add to the existing Britannia Street and Davies Street sites) just in time for the glittering Frieze art fair 2015. And if that wasn't exciting enough, the brains behind the project are architects Caruso St John, currently making Damien Hirst's new Vauxhall gallery a reality.
Cy Twombly paintings & career
Christening the Mayfair space is Cy Twombly, best known for his enormous free-hand paintings which made the American abstract artist a household name alongside contemporaries Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns. Twombly has actually opened several of Gagosian's spaces, including Rome, Paris and Athens, and with Larry Gagosian's backing his work has become an unstoppable force on the art market.
Gagosian Gallery London & Cy Twombly
You'll also find other paintings, sculptures and works on paper on display in this new Cy Twombly exhibition. However, the real highlight at the new Gagosian Gallery London are the fascinating Bacchus paintings of tremendous red looping handwriting etched across monumental canvases. These have never been seen publicly before as Twombly kept them in his studio until he died in 2011.
As Gagosian's star continues to rise, this is a wonderful opportunity to get up close and personal with a powerhouse artist and one of the most exciting new galleries on the scene.
