If the crowds at the Tate Britain Frank Auerbach exhibition are too much to handle, we recommend getting to grips with this superstar British contemporary artist at Marlborough Fine Art, where a far more intimate display of portraits will delight.
Who is Frank Auerbach? Biography...
The reclusive artist Frank Auerbach is a creature of habit, working out of the same studio in Mornington Crescent, north London since 1954 where he paints a handful of sitters that pay a visit at set times on set days of the week and scenes of the local Camden area. Auerbach arrived in Britain in 1939, a Jewish young boy fleeing the Nazi regime in Berlin as part of the rescue mission Kindertransport.
Frank Auerbach: paintings & art
We love Auerbach's thick impasto painting style, where layers of earthy oils are layered on top of one another to create a fantastically textured surface that pulsates with energy. He often works with a single subject for months, scraping the canvas and starting over several times.
Marlborough Fine Art London exhibition
Look out at this small exhibition for paintings and drawings that cover all of Auerbach's stellar career, including some new works that have never been exhibited before. We are particularly intrigued by the new self-portrait in graphite and pastel on paper, and a portrait by British Expressionist painter Leon Kossoff. You'll also find landscapes of his beloved north London on display.
But the real joy in this show is the homage to Auerbach's long standing sitters, such as Stella West (known as E.O.W.), Julia Yardley Mills (J.Y.M.) and Catherine Lampert. There's also his wife Julia Auerbach, art historian Ruth Bromberg and founder of Print Quarterly David Landau on the roster of sitters.
One of the finest British contemporary artists around, we can't recommend this Frank Auerbach exhibition in Mayfair highly enough!
