Anne Truitt & Minimalism
In 1968, the art critic Clement Greenberg wrote of the artist Anne Truitt: “If any one artist started or anticipated Minimal Art, it was she.” Truitt, though, refused the compliment because her work was assiduously made by her own hand rather than through the industrial processes indelibly linked with minimalism. You only need to look at Truitt’s trademark colourful column-like wooden sculptures to see why Greenberg made the link.

At Stephen Friedman Gallery’s forthcoming exhibition of Truitt’s drawings, you’ll be able to sample a selection of her work spanning four decades, which bring to life Truitt’s painstaking quest in the art of abstraction. This London art exhibition is the first major presentation of her drawings in the UK and follows a smaller solo exhibition of Truitt's sculptures in 2011 at the gallery.
Anne Truitt drawings
Truitt’s drawings demonstrate the depth of her visual imagination, as well as a restraint and a disposition dedicated to discipline – the artist rose early in the morning to work in the studio behind her home and was meticulous in her approach.
Despite Greenberg’s praise, Truitt faced tough times in a male dominated art world during her career and, despite her critical acclaim today, is less known in the wider public eye than her abstract and minimalist male contemporaries such as Donald Judd, Robert Morris, Richard Serra and Kenneth Noland. Aficionados of minimalist art and abstraction will be pleased to see her work celebrated here.
