The human brain is a mightily complex piece of work. Chaotic information from all five senses rush in an unending stream to be ordered categorized and presented, in an act that we call perception.
Maaike Schoorel: Maureen Paley
Dutch artist Maaike Schoorel approaches this phenomenon of perception, and the human brain’s capacity to understand the external world in a new show at Maureen Paley, Bethnal Green. For her 4th solo exhibition, Schoorel displays a collection of paintings that explore the unconscious process of collecting information via our sensory organs which is either deemed useful and stored as memory, or discarded. Dissolving and appearing, Maaike Schoorel’s subjects are so faint and delicate that they evaporate almost as quickly as you can grasp them. These curious works which have caught the attention of Charles Saatchi already are worth a visit if you are looking for things to do in east London this spring.
