Superstars of the Young British Artists (YBA) generation, including Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst, Gary Hume and Chris Ofili, are featured in this unique new exhibition of editions at Shapero Modern gallery, London. The YBA group shot to fame in the 1990s with the backing of renowned art dealer Charles Saatchi and have defined British contemporary art ever since. Rack Em’ Up
captures the determination of these young artists as they made their mark on the international art market.
Exhibition highlights
Stepping into this contemporary art show is a portal to the 1990s where Gillian Wearing’s thought-provoking imagery rubs shoulders with Keith Coventry’s mischievous sculpture. Don’t miss Damien Hirst’s Last Supper series, where pharmaceutical products have their names replaced with foodstuffs commonly associated with the working class, like ‘corned beef’ and ‘sausages’. You should also pay attention to Great Britain’s representative at the Venice Biennale 2015, Sarah Lucas, and her Self Portrait With Fried Eggs. The event will be topped off by photography from Johnnie Shand Kydd, whose book Spitfire (1997) documented the pioneering exuberance of the YBAs in the 1990s.
