Daniel Silver is obsessed with sculpture of the Ancient world; from searching forgotten quarries of Carrara marble in Pietrasanta to studying the statues and busts in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.
In this new exhibition at Frith Street Gallery, London, Silver has produced works which both celebrate and confound our expectations of this classical art form. The show comprises two parts, beginning with large scale collages of stone and bronze heads placed directly on to monumental pieces of Carrara marble. These works are notched with incidental marks that, according to Silver, bring out the material’s potential similarity to the human form.
You’ll also find a series of copies of classical busts which Silver has worked on, both to accentuate their features and to highlight the flaws within the rock.
A classical art form which celebrated idealized human anatomy shifts its focus to the beauty of imperfection under the watchful eye of artist Daniel Silver.
