Embracing sculpture, painting, dance and performance; Nengudi’s practice is by no means easy to categorize. This White Cube Bermondsey exhibition, her first ever UK solo, promises a wide-ranging display, from pieces created in the 70s through to her latest series - Reverie.
What is Senga Nengudi’s artistic style?
Bringing together found objects, organic matter (sand, dirt, rocks, and seed pods) and often the human body itself, Nengudi’s method of assembling material has been likened to the way in which a jazz musician uses notes and sounds to improvise compositions. Aiming to seduce the senses, Nengudi often foregrounds issues of race and gender in her sculptures and choreographed performances.
Renowned for her ability to create evocative and often immersive spaces within the gallery, this exhibition of performance and sculpture in London promises to be well worth the visit.
