Christian Marclay, White Cube Bermondsey

A new London art show from Golden Lion winner, Christian Marclay: White Cube gallery hosts this innovative exhibition where music and fine art meet

Christian Marclay 28 January – 12 April 2015 South Galleries, North Galleries and 9 x 9 x 9, Bermondsey
After winning the Golden Lion for Best Artist at the 2011 Venice Biennale with his film The Clock: Christian Marclay, the Swiss-American artist and composer, returns with a major solo exhibition at White Cube.
Christian Marclay: art and biography
For over 30 years Marclay has made it his life’s work to fuse fine art with audio. Transforming sound and music into a visible, physical form, Marclay is known for his performance, collage, sculpture, installation, photography and video work. His earliest experiments with sound, art and performance began in 1979, when he was still a student and was using records and turntables as interactive, improvising musical instruments.
Marclay is said to be the first non-rap DJ to make an art form out of the turntable, treating the instrument as a means to rip songs apart, rather than bridge them together.
White Cube exhibition London
This contemporary art exhibition London at White Cube, Bermondsey features new paintings, works on paper and videos along with a dynamic programme of performances, which are free and open to the public.
At the weekend, musicians and composers from The London Sinfonietta will provide live improvisation sessions and performances of newly commissioned compositions. Additionally, The Vinyl Factory is taking up residence in the contemporary art gallery to press vinyl records of the previous weekend’s performances. You’ll also find leading printmaker and publishing house, Coriander Studio, printing unique silk-screened record sleeves.
Why do we love him?
Marclay’s work is appealing because of the intersection between human and conceptual values, coupled with a refreshing and original execution. As music critic Thom Juerk said: “While many intellectuals have made wild pronouncements about Marclay and his art….they never seem to mention that these sound collages of his are charming, very human, and quite often intentionally hilarious.” We couldn’t agree more.
