Richard Serra is one of the most influential sculptors of the 20th century, and the most famous American sculptor working today. The NYC based artist, now just shy of 80 years old, is famed for his huge minimalist metal abstractions. His site-specific sculptures span the globe, from Iceland to New Zealand, Bilbao and Birmingham.

This Autumn, we're treated to two Serra exhibitions: Drawings, over at Gagosian Davies Street and NJ-2, Rounds: Equal Weight, Equal Measure and Rotate, at Gagosian Britannia Street. Both exhibitions are made of entirely new work: fifteen new drawings at Davies street and three large sculptures over at Britannia Street.

Often occupying public spaces or permanently installed in a museum setting, Serra's oeuvre blurs the line between art and architecture, and thrives in interacting and reacting to its environment. In the 60s and 70s, his awe-inspiring yet minimal forms signified a new look for the modern cityscape which complemented the new, hard lines of steel skyscrapers and industrial chic. Finesse springs to mind as a good way to describe Serra's sculptures, which seem to possess an effortless balance.
