Jeff Koons, Almine Rech Gallery, Exhibition

From Balloon animals to puppy vases, Koons work is rarely dull and never fails to be controversial; you can see it for yourself in Savile Row until January.

Jeff Koons at the Almine Rech Gallery, Savile Row
His name is synonymous with American Post-Pop; his work digests the trash of contemporary culture and spits it back out in lurid pantomime. Koons is a millionaire, many many times over. His works sell for astronomical, record-breaking sums. And he is most famous for making giant balloon animals which may or may not lack any discernible artistic message. It can only be Jeff Koons.

"Great artists are always complex and complicated figures. Unlike philosophers, they are also able to simplify matters, enabling understanding at a single glance by which all is revealed"; so starts Almine Rech's explanation of Jeff Koons, whose work will be featured in their Savile Row gallery from October. While we are not sure that this is really a fair description of Koons - few people glancing at his work, whether they spy a hulk or a basketball, are likely to feel that all has been revealed - his naive, playful works indisputably draw attention, both critical and commercial, wherever they land.

Framing Koons as a modern day Renaissance master, leading a workshop of juniors in the creation of works reflecting the whims and desires of the contemporary public, Almine Rech invite their visitors to experience his work as an extension of Duchamp, not only incorporating the viewer but spitting her image back, multiplied by the slick, ballooned surfaces of his works. Whether this is deeply thought out or simply the purple prose of a gallery with sales to make is for the visitor to determine, but either way Koons's enduring popularity might well make it worth a visit to Savile Row if you happen to be in the area.

Almine Rech will be showing Koons's works between 4th October and 21st January, 10am - 6pm.
