Year on year the Proms welcomes into the classical repertoire the best of music from other genres, here expertly performed by two jazz virtuosi.

Detroit-born Dianne Reeves is considered by many to be the heiress to Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald. And it is Ella’s music that she showcases at this musical party conducted by Broadway musical and Hollywood film-score director John Mauceri.

To mark 100 years since Ella’s birth, Reeves sings her great hits – fingers crossed for They Can’t Take That Away From Me, I Got Rhythm, and Lady Be Good.

Born six months later in the same year, trumpeter and band leader Dizzy Gillespie is remembered in music by the virtuosic Australian multi-instrumentalist James Morrison.

The BBC Concert Orchestra is one of the corporation’s most versatile ensembles, at home in a huge range of genres and blessed with players who can really swing. And at the other end of the musical spectrum, the orchestra has just played superbly for two productions at Grange Park Opera in its new home: Tosca and Jenůfa.
