It is a momentous week over at the National Gallery, with the launch of the new membership scheme. After finally agreeing to let visitors take personal photographs of the collection in August, it seems the radical changes just keep on coming.

The new system will allow National Gallery members, for as little as £50 a year, unlimited entry to all exhibitions, invitations to special events, exclusive access to the online magazine and a members’ newsletter.

Dr Nicholas Penny, Director National Gallery, said “It gives me great pleasure that before I retire in 2015 I am now able to launch the very first National Gallery Membership scheme.” Penny also hopes that the scheme will provide vital information regarding visitor satisfaction, allowing the Gallery to “provide an exceptional visitor experience for every single person who walks through our doors.”

Of course, for an institution that has only just got Wi-Fi, the new members scheme is hardly ground breaking. Nevertheless, we are desperate to get our hands one of those personalised members’ cards.
