Louis Vuitton announces latest collaboration with Jeff Koons

An ambitious collaboration: Jeff Koons x Louis Vuitton
This might be one of the more ambitious collaborations we've heard about in a while... High fashion or hilarious?

2017 seems to be the year of all things rhinestoned, veloured, gold, and kitsch (Juicy Couture x Vetements and Louis Vuitton x Supreme) but this could be a step too far. The Great Masters' names emblazoned in gold (à la Paris Hilton's go-to belts circa 2003) across a boyish backpack has left us a little dazed and confused. Poor Da Vinci.

Over the years, Louis Vuitton has worked with a number of contemporary art’s most significant artists – from Takashi Murakami to Yayoi Kusama. It comes as no surprise that the French fashion house would team up with highly-recognised (yet still increasingly controversial) Post-Pop artist Jeff Koons for their latest endeavor.

Titled Masters, the collection is inspired by Koon’s Gazing Ball series in which the American artist placed blue reflective balls on tiny shelves in front of reinterpreted masterpieces. Although Koons has previously worked with fashion brands, this is the first time he has created an original design for a fashion house rather than pre-imposing his work on an item.

And while the accessories line might evoke 'school-trip chic / The Louvre / the man with the LV print tattoo sleeve' to the cynics amongst you, you can't knock Koons' chutzpah. There are few artists who would dare call into use the work of Da Vinci, or a master of similar calibre, let alone display their own initials alongside them.

It certainly makes for a distinctive collection. Each purse features a classic painting (from Da Vinci, Titian, Rubens, Fragonard and Van Gogh) with the name of the artist embellished across it in gold block letters; each also also possesses an inflatable bunny charm, an image that has grown to become synonymous with Koons; oh, and there's the Louis Vuitton logo, too.

The collection will only be offered in select Louis Vuitton stores come April 28th. You can view the range of products and find out more about the collaboration here.
