The Tempest, Westminster Abbey

See Shakespeare's late comedy brought to life in the historic surroundings of Westminster Abbey

The Tempest, Westminster Abbey
Stormy weather and a magical island come to Westminster Abbey this summer as Shakespeare's The Tempest is brought to life in the scenic surroundings of Dean's Yard. Outdoor Theatre experts Illyria return after the success of 2018's The Merchant of Venice.

The inventive band of five actors specialise in staging Shakespeare, totally uncut, in the open air. Combining an authoritative interpretation of the text with an inventive approach to location, they offer a picturesque alternative to standard theatrical productions.

With sorcery, romance and shipwrek, The Tempest has plenty to enchant audiences. There's comedy courtesy of drunken hi-jinks and mistaken identities, along with love, as sheltered Miranda discovers the romantic potential of the world beyond her island. As one of Shakespeare's last plays, the story of powerful Prospero learning to leave his books and secluded kingdom has parallels with the playwright saying 'goodbye' to the stage.

In their 28th touring season, Illyria have plenty of expertise when it comes to Shakespeare. And the historic Westminster Abbey backdrop will guarantee a unique atmosphere – let's just hope the skies aren't too tempestuous for this open air show.
