Explosive and timely, this new play about Boris Johnson will be rewritten every night

Brexit is everywhere, so you’ll be forgiven if a Brexit-inspired play is the last thing you want to hear about. Before you run off, though, bear with us because The Last Temptation of Boris Johnson is nothing short of explosive.

From the journalist and playwright Jonathan Maitland (who also penned the controversial An Audience with Jimmy Savile and Dead Sheep) and director Lotte Wakeham (in-coming artistic director of the Octagon Theatre, Bolton), the comedy drama propels audiences to post-Brexit Britain in 2029. In a country divided, Boris Johnson is back with ambitions to make Britain great again. Navigating a career in politics and the media, Johnson is divisive as ever, and after an unexpected turn of events he finds himself – once again – embroiled in controversy.

You might think any attempt to bring current affairs to the stage will be hopelessly outdated, but not so with The Last Temptation of Boris Johnson. The story will be rewritten every night to keep it up to date with the rapidly changing political picture. As Maitland puts it, ‘the stress I’m feeling isn’t quite on a par with that being felt by a certain Mrs T. May of SW1…'

The play will have its world premiere at Park Theatre in May. Here’s guessing how many times the script will have to be redone before then.
