Star of screen and stage Catherine Tate returns to the London scene for a new musical comedy set in 1952 Las Vegas.
Capturing the oddities of an era where glamour is everything and nuclear testings take place in plain view of the Vegas strip, Tanya Link productions present new musical Miss Atomic Bomb, which gets its world premiere at Off-West-End venue the St James Theatre this spring.
Having become a household name from Dr Who and her eponymous TV impression show and impressed the critics on stage in The Vote (Donmar 2015) and Assassins (Menier Chocolate Factory, 2014) Catherine Tate stars as fashionista Myrna Ranapapadophilou. She's joined by a cast of musical theatre regulars, including star of The Lorax, Simon Lipkin and Dean John-Wilson, who will play the lead role in this summer's big budget Disney Aladdin musical.
With a title taken from the real life beauty pageants that were part of the atomic bomb frenzy, the show is described as a coming of age story — for both its characters and America. The plot synopsis promises romance and explosive comedy: four friends face challenges in a city controlled by mobster and military. Farm girl Candy doesn't know why her sheep are dying; designer Myrna is fashioning clothes for pigs; soldier Joey has deserted the army; and Lou is looking for a nuclear gimmick to bring sparks to the hotel he manages.
There's an original songbook and musical supervision from arranger and conductor for the X Factor, Matthew Brind. American director and founder of comedy troupe The Reduced Shakespeare Company Adam Long and Strictly Come Dancing specialist chorographer, the Olivier-winning Bill Dreamer will co-direct Miss Atomic Bomb — so expect laugh out loud humour and impressive dance numbers.
