Matt Smith in An Enemy of the People, Duke of York's Theatre
We last saw him on stage in 2019, when he reunited with his co-star from The Crown Claire Foy for a revival of Duncan Macmillan's play Lungs. Now, the former face of Doctor Who is returning to theatre to star in a West End production of Henrik Ibsen's An Enemy of the People.

It's not a new adaptation of the play, mind: Thomas Ostermeier’s take on the drama ran at the Barbican Theatre in 2014, with his own Schaubühne Berlin company. With Smith stepping into the lead this time, we're expecting the production to be more of a British affair, but details of the other creatives involved are yet to be announced.

The story follows Dr Stockmann, the new proprietor of the town's communal baths. He's keen to celebrate his new business, but no sooner have the baths opened than rumours start emerging that their waters are contaminated. The ripple effect is huge, threatening the livelihoods and reputation of Stockmann's whole family. But is doubt spreading faster than disease in this town?

The production is set to run at the West End's Duke of York's Theatre for nine weeks, previewing from Tuesday 6 February 2024. Click here to book.
