Indira Varma and Ralph Fiennes in Macbeth, Dock X

Ralph Fiennes and Indira Varma star in Macbeth
It's not the only celebrity-fronted production of The Scottish Play opening this winter (see also the Donmar's take starring David Tennant and Cush Jumbo), but its staging promises to make it a little unusual: Ralph Fiennes and Indira Varma (The Seagull, Faith Healer) front Simon Godwin's site-specific production of Macbeth, opening in Liverpool (Friday 24 November – Saturday 16 December, venue TBC) before transferring to Edinburgh's Royal Highland Centre (Saturday 13 – Saturday 27 January) and then a vast warehouse, Dock X, in Canada Water (Saturday 10 February – Saturday 23 March).

Godwin is staging the show with the Washington DC-based Shakespeare Theatre Company, of which he is currently artistic director, and the production will be transferring to the US capital after its London run.

Further casting is yet to be announced for the show, which is based on an adaptation by Emily Burns, and features set and costume design by Frankie Bradshaw.

While the performance spaces will be custom-built and unconventional, Godwin's production also promises to give audiences 'the chance to be even closer to the action'. Whether through incorporating immersive elements into the stage design, or by having the audience sit or stand within the action (or both!) is yet to be seen, but we're certainly intrigued.
