Imagine if your entire world was confined within one small room. Imagine bringing up child in this enforced captivity.
This is the story of Emma Donoghue's novel Room. First it gripped us a novel, then a film adaptation starring Oscar-winning Brie Larson. Now Room comes to the the London stage, as a 'play with songs' adapted by Donoghue herself, with music and lyrics by Kathryn Joseph and Cora Bissett.
Telling the story of a young girl's kidnap, imprisonment, mistreatment and liberation, Room is comprised of disturbing themes. But this extraordinary story is told by her five-year-old son Jack. It's this childish perspective of the room, and the easy acceptance from a little boy who knows no other life, that makes Room so absorbing and tender.
We're intrigued to see how this narrative intimacy can be created on stage. And, after the memorable performance from seven-year-old Jacob Tremblay in the film, it will be interesting to see a new young talent on stage. Casting is yet to be announced.
