The new Don Juan: David Tennant returns to the West End for an updated version of Moliere's masterpiece

Don Juan in Soho: David Tennant West End return
From time travel to sex addiction: Doctor Who star David Tennant returns to the London stage to star as history's ultimate hedonist in a contemporary version of Don Juan, refreshed, relocated and directed by Patrick Marber.

Don Juan in Soho brings Moliere's 1665 comedy into contemporary London, amidst the gentrification and smut of W1. Marber's version of the play premiered at the Donmar Warehouse in 2006 starring Rhys Ifans. Critics reported a radical, raucous take on the classic, with a new lothario for the noughties. DJ, armed with a trust fund and Blackberry to keep track of his 5,000+ conquests, whizzes through the Soho Square mile in a whirlwind of sex, drugs and debauchery.

While reviews for Don Juan in Soho back in 2006 were largely positive, the consensus was that Marber's version of the fable, for all its hiliarity, lacked the subversive clout of Moliere's original. A decade later it will be interesting to see who this first major revival is reworked -- especially in the context of a Soho made ever more bland by a stream of luxury hotels and flats replacing the insalubrious late night haunts.

But in whatever form, all the life and spark of the Don Juan story rests on the central character. Thanks to starring roles in the likes of Doctor Who and Broadchurch, and stage triumphs at the Donmar, RSC and National Theatre, David Tennant is one of Britain's most beloved actors. With an enthusiastic global fan base plus a proven pedigree in playing Shakespeare he straddles the roles of megastar and traditional thespian.

We predict his Don Juan will have a darker, more manic depth than Ifans's Peter Cook syle comic figure -- and we know for sure that the prospect of David Tennant playing a sex addict live of stage will ignite ticket sales.
