Alexander Zeldin unpacks the notion of love in a new devised play about four vulnerable families in the run up to Christmas

In Rufus Norris' big-budget, high profile first season in charge of the National Theatre there was an understated, stand out hit. Playwright Alexander Zeldin's Beyond Caring. The quietly devastating story of factory workers on zero hour contracts began at Dalston's Yard Theatre before transferring the N.T's Temporary Theatre in 2015.

Now, Alexander Zeldin returns to the National Theatre with a new devised play, Love, premiering on the Dorfman stage. Again the story centres around vulnerable people and pertinent issues: a Sudanese immigrant, a young family expecting a baby and a middle-aged man caring for his elderly mother are squashed into temporary accommodation. It's almost Christmas and they stand little chance of getting their own space.

Expect a tender portrait, with all the naturalism of a play devised during the rehearsal process and none of the hollow moralising or cheesy cheerfulness so common in Christmas theatre.

Public booking for Love at the National Theatre opens at 8:30 am on Thursday 29 September.
