And 2017, an era of pussy-grabbing leaders, calls for a feminist revolution. A day after Trump was sworn into office, millions of people across the world’s seven continents marched in solidarity against Trump and in of support of women’s rights.
The Women’s March on Washington (alone) is rumoured to be around three times the size of Trump’s inauguration. While the last year was unofficially dubbed the year of the woman, there were several moments when it felt like anything but that.
But the political, economic, and social inequality of the sexes far predates the new President. And the feminist movement runs deeper. Celebrate women in all capacities at London's annual feminist festival.
The Southbank Centre's Women of the Wold festival, which was launched in 2011 to mark the centenary of International Women’s Day, celebrates women (in all their diverse glory) and looks at the everyday obstacles they face. The ultimate goal is to create an inclusive environment for everyone, influence ideologies and expand hearts.
This March, a stellar lineup of women, including Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, prominent feminist and political activist Angela Davis, Britain's first veiled television journalist Fatima Manji, and radio presenter Gemma Cairney make the voices of millions heard by sharing their stories via live London talks. A number of free mentoring sessions and events are also available to attend. Art and Identity with gal-den, for instance, will allow attendees to create feminist artwork with two of the magazine's editors.
Talks worth looking out for are Attack of the Fifty-Foot Women, where Sandi Toksvig talks with Catherine Mayer on gender equality and her latest book, and various discussions with leading political voices such as No Country for Young Women, What does Brexit mean for women?, and Badass Lesbians from History.
Performances include THEATREclub presents: The Game, where audiences can explore the act of buying sex through an immersive play, and a performance by up-and-coming musical artist Nilüfer Yanya.
