What is the best way to tell a story? Is there one? What are the advantages of different story telling mediums? Kasper Holten, Director of Opera at the ROH unpicks the advantages and differences of the various methods of storytelling with songwriter and musician Sharleen Spiteri and novelist Andrew O’Hagan. All three discuss their personal approach to telling stories and consider what they share in the storytelling process, what makes a story or character exciting and the pains of innovation.

Shoreline Spiteri launched a solo career with the release of her debut solo album Melody in 2008, and her second solo album The Movie Songbook was released in March 2010. She is also the lead singer of Texas, that has been playing together since 1989 and surpassed global album sales of 35 million.
Award winning novelist Andrew O’Hagan has twice been nominated for the Man Booker Prize and was voted one of Granta’s Best of Young British Novelists in 2003. He won the Los Angeles Times Book Award and the E.M. Forster Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Although O'Hagan is regularly described as one of his generation’s most exciting and serious chroniclers of contemporary Britain, he has a lighter side, writing for Esquire and the New York Times.
Danish director Kasper Holten was appointed Director of Opera forThe Royal Opera in 2011. Highly accalimed director of opera and theatre, he has directed more than 65 productions including an award-winning Ring cycle for Royal Danish Opera. His first directorial debut at the Royal Opera House was with Eugene Onegin in 2013 and he has since directed Don Giovanni for the Company.
