Francis Bacon documentary
In 1985, the Bafta award-winning director David Hinton masterminded a documentary film for the South Bank Show which delved into the life of the turbulent and visceral artist, Francis Bacon, who we know for his emotionally raw work, distaste for the academy and homosexuality. In the film Bacon and presenter of the South Bank Show, Melvyn Bragg, exchange ideas over glasses of wine in Bacon's favourite bar, muse over the validity of Mark Rothko at the Tate and pay a visit to Bacon's studio.
The 'greatest living painter in the world', as he was referred to by Bragg, will have his career revisited at a special ICA screening of the film in April. Particularly special to this screening of the Southbank Show: The Life and Career of Francis Bacon will be the opportunity to discuss the film further in a Q&A with Melvyn Bragg and ICA Executive Director Gregor Muir.
FB55 ICA exhibition
Entirely frank and honest about his tumultuous life, the fascinating Hinton film is well timed alongside the ICA FB55 exhibition which traces back the truth of Francis Bacon's first exhibition at the London venue in 1955. The show was so controversial at the time that two policemen were called to the ICA to verify if a particular study of two men wrestling was actually an illegal act, as homosexuality still carried a prison sentence.
This is a rare chance to understand more about one of Britain's finest painters, whose tempestuous emotional life and dark, violent paintings have inspired generations of artists.
