Tate Britain, London might have a major Frank Auerbach retrospective in the autumn, but you can get to grips a lot sooner with the work of one of Britain's most famous artists at this Royal Academy event in May. Director of Artistic Programmes Tim Marlow discusses with the reclusive London painter what has driven him over his long career and why he paints every day of the year.
Frank Auerbach biography
Since arriving in London from Berlin in 1939, Auerbach has rarely left, and his world is remarkably compact. He has used the same studio in Mornington Crescent since 1954 from where he paints portraits of a handful of sitters, and city scenes in and around the local area. His sitters – his wife, his son and a few friends – come at set times, on set days every week of the year. Some have been coming for over fifty years. And Auerbach doesn’t take any days off, describing it as a mad idea to wake up and do anything other than paint!
