July Lifestyle Edit

From the pop-up to book to the bijou exhibition to visit, here's how to enjoy July in London

The exhibition…

…Gordon Parks: Part One at Alison Jacques Gallery

Alison Jacques Gallery is staging the first solo show of Gordon Parks' work to be held in London for over 25 years. Parks was a humanitarian with a deep and life-long commitment to social justice, and the images in this powerful exhibition will explore two defining stories, Segregation in the South (1956) and Black Muslims (1963).The visionary images that constitute both these series offered visibility to often marginalised, anonymous families and misrepresented figures in American society at large.

The brand…

…Story mfg

Sustainable British brand Story mfg has seen sales of its hand-embroidered dresses and signature tie-dyed T-shirts rocket by 200% since lockdown. This is largely down to promotion from a set of loyal A-list admirers – Gigi Hadid among them – along with its planet-saving ethos that's inspiring shoppers' post-pandemic mentality. The brand combines new and traditional techniques along with organic, natural fibres to create sustainable and cruelty-free vegan clothing that is 100% biodegradable after use.

Style muse…

…Tennis players

Wimbledon might be cancelled this year, but to fill the tennis-shaped hole in our hearts we've been looking back at the sport's longstanding history with fashion. Three of our favourite ensembles include René Lacoste's pristine tailoring and matching peaked caps, Yannick Noah's electric blue shorts and Bowie T-shirt, and Björn Borg's shoulder-length hair and headbands that served as the inspiration for The Royal Tenenbaums' Richie.

Journalist and podcast host Pandora Sykes brings her keen wit and incisive sense of the zeitgeist to a new collection of essays. How Do We Know We're Doing It Right? explores the foundations and fears of modern life, from millennial burnout to fast fashion. Instead of preaching or proffering answers for how to get it right, this is a book that celebrates uncertainty and multiplicity. The standalone essays are easy to dip into, each bringing a clarity and a fresh perspective to the issues that tangle up modern life.
