Five beauty buzzwords 2018 is spotlighting

From sheet masks to anti-filter makeup, these are the beauty trends 2018 is spotlighting

Beauty Buzzwords 2018
Sheet Masks

From hydration hits to smoothing flyaways, sheet masks have seduced us. Perhaps it's the promise of words like rejuvenating,’ ‘brightening, 'moisture-surging',’ ‘tightening,’ ‘detoxifying,’ and ‘pore-cleansing'. Perhaps – especially in this millennial-driven age – it's the shareability of the masks. Key #sheetmask into any social media platform, and you're met with rows of papery selfies staring back. While you may not have tried them, you will have seen them: face-shaped sheets of cloth or paper, loaded with liquid serum, with holes for the eyes and mouth. The main attraction of the sheet masks is that, unlike wash-off versions, the sheet traps the formula in the skin. Tip: keep them in the fridge for extra cooling qualities.

Our Favourite: Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Concentrated Recovery PowerFoil Mask, £17 (for 1). Here
The glow-giver: Sarah Chapman Skinesis 3D Moisture Infusion Masks, £43 (for 4). Here.
Gels

2018 is seemingly taking a hiatus from crèmes and oils, leaving room for a new generation of gel-products to have a serious moment. Moisturisers aplenty are now championing a jelly-like formula, featherweight and cooling. They are perfect for those who suffer from oil-excess (as the gel hydrates skin without overwhelming it) and those who suffer from dehydrated skin but find creams too heavy for daily use.

Thirsty skin? Try Clinique's Moisture Surge 72 Hour Auto-Replenishing Hydrator, from £24. Here
Redness? Try La Mer's Moisturising Cooling Gel Cream, £120. Here
Graphic Liner

It's time to venture out from the safety of the cat-eye flicks, and try something geometric and new. Architectural liner was all the rage at LFW – thick, sometimes colourful, and innovative. Alternatively, dots of bright shadow or glitter in the inner corner of the eye were the other big makeup trend we saw.

Buy: Matte, thick-pointed felt-tip liners like this one from MAC, as they are the best bet for achieving a precise, show-stopping look.

Anti-Filter Beauty

Intense contouring is out, fresh-faced and natural skin is in. Swap sharply defined brows to wilder ones, mascara-coated lashes for understated ones, and switch up heavy shaded contouring and shading for thin veils of tinted moisturiser and a lick of gloss. Hello glow.

Brushed-up brows: Try Anastasia Beverly Hills Clear Brow Gel, £23. Here
Barely-there coverage: Try Laura Mercier's Oil-Free Tinted moisturiser, £34. Here
Superfood Beauty

From leafy green ingredients to anti-oxidising, nutrient-packed formulations, superfood skincare has established its position as a huge (expanding) force in the beauty industry. Products derived from nature have existed for many thousands of years, so the 'superfood' branding is essentially a twist on a tried and tested formula. Plus, applying these ingredients topically is essentially just changing the nourishment from the inside-out to the outside-in.
