What are the Churchill War Rooms?
The Churchill War Rooms, London's hidden treasure beneath Whitehall, was the Prime Minister's secret hideaway during the Blitz, when German bombs hammered the capital. Churchill used to take refuge here during air-raids and the War Cabinet would meet late at night to chart the course of the war. Preserved underground, the government HQ was transformed into a spectacular public attraction in 1980, revealing the fascinating history of World War II and the decisions that changed the tide of the conflict.

Step back in time at this London attraction which leads visitors through a warren of war rooms, the Cabinet room, kitchens, sleepinq quarters and of course - the impressive new Churchill Museum set up in 2005. With heaps of information provided and engaging waxworks bringing the history to life, this makes for a great day out for the little ones.

Boys in particular will love the dark, cramped bunkers and chance to relive the battles of the Second World War. Free Churchill War Rooms audio guides and interactive displays also help to engage children, with everything from air-raid sounds overhead to a teapot shaped like a tank.
Visiting tips
There can be a queue for day tickets, and the Churchill War Rooms tour with the audio guide is two hours alone, so make sure you leave plenty of time. It's also best suited for kids that have learnt a little about World War II at school so the museum can bring everything they've been studying to life.
