After astounding us in 2014, the stage adaptation of Jacqueline Wilson's story of a gutsy girl's search for her family returns to the West End for a 2015 revival.

Jacqueline Wilson's Hetty Feather: story
Based on the bestselling and much loved novel, which asks 'Will Hetty ever find her true home?', this is a touching exploration of bravery and independence. Hetty's mother abandons her at the foundling hospital, where she must endure the treatment of Nurse Bottomley, who is every bit as horrid as her name suggests. With an infectiously bold and appealing heroine, a delightful foster family and some madcap circus adventures, even the most cynical of grown ups will be moved.

The circus themes of the novel are expanded in the stage show to create a dynamic set, complete with a trapeze and complimented by a live score. Script writer Emma Reeves is no stranger to Wilson's novels; she adapted Tracy Beaker novels into an acclaimed television series.
When staging such a popular novel, there is the risk that the play with either veer too far from the text and alienate its fans, or fail to live up to Wilson's vivid imaginative world. This production pulls it off with aplomb, using imaginative aesthetic additions, such a flurries of red ribbon for the dramatic cutting of Hetty's hair. To top it off, Phoebe Thomas's Hetty is not only stunning acted, but she also looks the part completely - and, happily, Thomas has confirmed that she will reprise the role for this revival.

Our little critic was utterly enraptured, alternating between tears and giggles through this heart-warming production. Adults were just as absorbed, and perhaps more in awe of the skills behind the spectacular circus set and the acrobatics that accompany the acting. Phoebe Thomas as Hetty shone with all the spirit, imagination and gumption of a true Jacqueline Wilson heroine, while Paul Mundell's gentler, girly Gideon had the little ones in peals of laughter.
