Baby clothes rentals: the new way to kit out your newborn?

Parents are constantly on the lookout for new ideas when it comes to parenting more sustainably: from reusable nappies to toy rentals, it's all about minimising waste. And clutter. And saving money as well as the planet.
Baby clothing is a real culprit: kids on average move up seven sizes (!) in their first couple of years, and baby clothes are no doubt a significant contributor to the hundreds of thousands of tons of clothing that end up in landfill every year.
Once upon a time, parents would never have considered putting their precious babes in a secondhand outfit, but now, pre-loved clothing for kids - especially of the designer variety - is a booming business. When they do buy new, conscientious parents actively seek out ethically produced, organic clothes (baby brand Mori is a favourite) as well as anything made from recycled materials, like in Alex and Alexa's new range, Oii.
John Lewis recently launched a hand-me-down initiative, encouraging parents to give items like coats a second, and third, lease of life with organic cotton labelling inside, so the new owner can easily cross out the name of the old one.
Baby clothes rental initiatives are also having a moment: these subscription box services rather ingeniously let parents rent a selection of baby items which they can swap for the next size up when baby grows too big for them (plus, they arrive as fun subscription gift packages). Not only are the garments made from recycled water bottles, they're designed to fit children from nine months to four years - the idea for the brand was born after Ryan gave his new nephew a clothing item that the baby had already outgrown.
