The Time Machine, The London Library

The Time Machine, The London Library
Strap yourselves in and suspend your disbelief: an immersive event at the London Library, The Time Machine, is taking audiences on a journey through a labyrinth of parallel universes.

Inspired by HG Wells’ 1895 novella of the same name – which is credited for popularising the very notion of time travel and coining the term ‘time machine’ – this surreal and psychedelic adventure is the brainchild of Oxfordshire-based Creation Theatre. The experience is rooted in science, too, drawing on research from the Wellcome Centre for Ethics and Humanities into the future of neuroscience, big data, genomics and global connectedness.

Award-winning playwright Jonathan Holloway (BBC Audio Drama Awards, Edinburgh Fringe First Awards, Prix Italia) and director Natasha Rickman (Artistic Associate of Jermyn Street Theatre, and Assistant Director for the RSC and Shakespeare's Globe) are at the helm of the production, which sees the classic sci-fi novella pulled apart, reinvented and pieced back together to create a time travel experience that’s as exciting to 21st-century audiences as Wells’ fictional tale was to its 19th-century readers.

As part of a small group, prepare to be led on your very own time traveller adventure through the library, where Wells himself was a member for over 50 years. Expect the unexpected and prepare to be provoked on this journey into the unknown. As timelines blur, you might find names, faces and even the colour of your fellow travellers’ socks change without warning…

If you, like Wells, have always been fascinated by the concept of time travel, then this immersive event at the London Library could be just the ticket.
