Connected by Light, Canary Wharf

Canary Wharf fires up London's winter nights with Connected by Light, a collection of vibrant light artworks that invites visitors to immerse themselves in their multicoloured glow

Canary Wharf is all set to defeat the winter gloom with a dazzling display of light artworks, which will see residents and visitors alike through the darkest three months of the year.

Under the title Connected by Light, a collection of nine specially commissioned artworks joins forces with Canary Wharf's permanent collection of eight light art pieces, which are part of the estate's public art collection, to showcase the talent of UK artists.

All the works boast a variety of highly inventive themes, shapes and colours, from the Neon Tree, by artists Hawthorn, situated at the heart of Canada Square Park (pictured top), through Mandylights' Tetrapath, a geometric artwork at Westferry Circus that explores colour progressions through a complicated series of linear pathways.

Elsewhere, in a nod to the current year when working from home became the norm for so many of us, Office Party by Parker Heyl plays with fantasy and imagination to create a workspace coming to life in the absence of its worker.

Montgomery Square will be made to shimmer by Squidsoup's Murmuration. Inspired by, and named after the patterns of starlings in flight, this work consists of several hundred luminous orbs that dance in a synergy of light and sound, all connected through a channel of data.

These are just some of the works on display up until the end of February. The idea is that while strolling through the multi-coloured display, visitors should be able to unwind, relax and just enjoy the immersive interplay of light and colour. Some installations can be viewed at any time of day, while others will come to life after dark. Obviously, visitors that come after dusk will see all the pieces at their very best.

And because the displays are well spread out throughout the estate it won't be at all difficult to observe Covid-required social distancing.

Canary Wharf's bars, restaurants and shops remain open during display hours.

In order to enjoy it all to the full, it is advisable to download the Connected by Light map. You can do so here.
