Arthur Hooper's, Borough Market

Restaurants near Borough Market often honour the market's rich history, but this one is doing things differently

Arthur Hooper's, Borough Market
A restaurant with a vintage theme is opening next to Borough Market, celebrating the market’s rich history in its décor.

Cutting-edge designers Buster + Punch are behind the look of the restaurant, Arthur Hooper's, which is getting as many column inches as the food in the run-up to opening. Curiously, the theme is vintage but the look is rather more alternative, featuring interior fittings such as steel cage light fittings and strip neon lights, while the look is largely metallic and monochrome.

It’s not the Victorian Borough we pictured, although ‘decaying wooden’ stools are at least, we suppose, full of history.

Neil’s Yard has been namechecked as a supplier, but there’s no word as of yet about how much of the produce will come from the market, though – in keeping with the feel of the area – the service style will suit casual diners rather than formal dinners.

Sharing is encouraged, and pan-European dishes range from familiar cheese and charcuterie boards to unusual platters of crispy artichokes with garlic herb crème fraîche, harissa beans, salted ricotta, and pork and fennel fettuccine with salmoriglio breadcrumbs.
