Mash Steak House: London restaurant with Modern American emphasis ★★★★

The Mash Steak House London has long been one of the best restaurants near Piccadilly Circus for steak-lovers, and their new Wagyu beef offer makes them a cut above the rest

Mash restaurant, Brewer Street
The Mash steakhouse in Piccadilly offshoot Brewer Street has been serving steak to hungry tourists for three years. Located the heart of the West End, they're originally a Danish steak chain, with six locations in Denmark. Now they're making their mark on the London foodie scene with a range of choice cuts of steak, and a wine list to match.
The vast, art deco interior might seem intimidating, housed inside a former ballroom at the renovated Regent Palace Hotel but the emphasis on Modern American dining and dim lighting means the experience at MASH is relaxed, and the service friendly.
Some of the best steak in London: Wagyu beef is like Kobe, but better
The menu boasts an eclectic selection of cuts from around the globe, from USDA Prime rib to Uruguayan beef, as well as cuts from Denmark and Nebraska there's plenty on offer here for true steak lovers. They've recently gone a cut above other steak houses London has to offer, by adding a new 'Wagyu' beef to their menu. Like Kobe, but rarer, Wagyu cows come from Japan and, apparently, are fed mainly on natural herbs and beer – luxury indeed.
In addition to the steaks on offer, starters of carpaccio beef and tuna tartare are also reflective of their strong emphasis on sourcing – though these err on the side of over-seasoned. Nonetheless, the other sides include traditional mac 'n' cheese, fries, buttered spinach, all cooked to perfection, and no steak house would be complete without a nicely balanced healthy portion bearnaise sauce, which MASH does brilliantly. Their well-versed sommeliers has also curated an extensive wine list to pair with the meat on offer.
To top it all off (if you have room) there's a dessert menu with ice cream and cheesecake to leave you well and truly stuffed.
If you're looking for something intimate and unassuming then MASH may not be for you, but anyone serious about steak can do little better than Leicester Square's hidden hotspot. The hard part is deciding which steak to go for.
