Paradise Garage, Bethnal Green from The Manor Clapham
As if the social scene and the Common weren’t enough to feel smug about, until recently, Claphamites had superb modern bistro The Manor restaurant and The Dairy Clapham, both from chef Robin Gill and his team, all to themselves.
Now east Londoners get to share the joy with Gill’s new venture, Paradise Garage, opening in Bethnal Green on 14 July. Housed in a railway arch on Paradise Row, the restaurant centres around a bar, with banquette seating on the ground floor and a 20 seat mezzanine doubling as a private dining room.
Simon Woodrow (of Arbutus and The Dairy restaurant) will be in the kitchen serving up modern takes on British classics, among them barbecued sardines; lamb with sweetbreads, summer cabbage, peas and marjoram; and a ‘Picnic Feast’ of rabbit six ways (roasted saddle, confit leg, turnover, offal and belly scratchings). Kira Ghidoni, the tastebuds behind The Manor Clapham’s swoon-inducing dessert bar, will be taking care of puds.
