Magpie, Heddon Street

James Ramsden and Sam Herhily springboard from their Michelin-starred Pidgin to launch a new restaurant in central London

Magpie
James Ramsden and Sam Herlihy were two amateurs in 2015 when they set up their first restaurant, Pidgin. Two years on and their hospitality-first approach has customers returning, including those on the Michelin board, who awarded them a star in 2016.

At Magpie, their new restaurant, the duo will be cooking with unusual fusion ingredients new to London. They include kosho and fennel pollen, and all dishes will be served from table-side roaming trolleys. Other dishes confirmed from the Euro/Asian fusion menu include paitan broth and cavolo nero.

Pidgin is famous – above all – not for its food but the way it approaches its guests. "They're called guests for a reason" Herhily once said. Now food writer James Ramsden and indie musician Sam Herlihy are coming together to establish a new venture in Central London.

Magpie will hold its focus on British small plates dining, fused with Asian flavours. Other than a new breakfast menu, which opens out into all-day service throughout the day (Pidgin is only open for lunch and dinner), Magpie won't be very far removed from the duo's flagship.

Magpie is the chance to try the Michelin-starred food available in Hackney in the middle of central London.

Hot on the heels of the table-side trolleys will be cocktail trolleys, with slightly bonkers adaptations of classics, including one called I'm Jim Morrison I'm Dead (rye, oloroso, and cherry liqueur) and a short fiery concoction called Bo Diddly Rip Off (mescal and Hellfire bitters).
