African Summer, Horniman Museum

Horniman Museum African Summer festival sets south London alight with the beats and rhythm of African Culture

African Dance! African Summer, Horniman Museum London
This summer we are heading to south London where the Horniman Museum is hosting a festival of African culture packed with live music, art, film and dance. With heaps happening over the summer, we've picked our favourite events at the Horniman not to miss!
Dance & Workshops
The raucous carnival kicks off on Sunday 5th July with Africa Dance!, a splendid evening of diverse music and performances inspired by African culture. You can even get involved and learn a few moves. Throughout August, pay a visit from 11am - 3.30pm for a riot of African-inspired activities. Every Wednesday there is a new focus, from Beatbox to the Lindy Hop.
Jazz Picnics
Enjoy the warm English summer evenings at the Horniman with the weekly concerts where you can bask in a deck chair with a cool drink and enjoy the delights of Afro blues, Afrobeat and African jazz. 16th July legendary Algerian musician Seddik Zebiri takes to the stage with his band Seeds of Creation. You'll love the Psychedelic sounds which take you straight you to the heart of the Sahara. 23rd July its the turn of Zambian folk and urban artist Namvula with her quirky musical stylings that blends her Scottish roots, London hometown and Zambian birthplace. Finally 30th July you shouldn't miss multiple award winning Afrobeat legend Dele Sosimi who cunningly blends funk grooves with Nigerian traditions.
The big finale is the Carnival on Sunday 30th August in the gorgeous Horniman gardens, which are always worth a visit, filled with pop-up performances, music and delicious food. Start the day watching the incredible Mandinga Arts performers who have been preparing their vibrant costumes, masks and puppets all summer long. Dance workshops and parades bring this joyful group to life. Over at the bandstand there are a lovely series of dancefloor-shaking performances by Electric Jalaba, Afrospot Allstars and Yaaba Funk.
If you love African culture, we recommend getting involved with the Horniman's vibrant summer programme.
