Building a Dialogue: The Architect and the Client, Sir John Soane's Museum

This spring, Sir John Soane’s Museum, London brings together a comprehensive survey of the dynamics between architect and commissioner in its latest exhibition, Building a Dialogue: The Architect and the Client.

By exploring the intricacies of this relationship, the John Soane’s Museum collection also traces the wider development of the architecture profession from Elizabethan times through to the Victorian era.
Look out for interesting case studies such as the John Soane Dulwich Picture Gallery designs and his work to construct Holy Trinity Church, Marylebone. You’ll also spy other British architectural pioneers, such as Sir Christopher Wren’s Royal Naval College. An array of never-before seen drawings, models, correspondence and more illustrate the various client roles in the architectural process: private and public clients, the state as a client, and even the posthumous client.
A particular highlight is the recently discovered drawing by Soane of the façade of the museum – one of very few drawings by the architect of his home, which makes for an exceptional setting for this unique architecture exhibition.
