Intuitive gestures: an exhibition of new work by Fredrikson Stallard
The acclaimed avant-garde British design duo Fredrikson Stallard – Swedish-born Patrik Fredrikson and Briton Ian Stallard trained and met at Central St Martins in the 1990s – are back with a new body of work and a much-anticipated exhibition. Intuitive gestures opens at London's prestigious David Gill Gallery this autumn, and showcases the conceptual and highly ambitious capsule Antartica Collection alongside works never-seen before in the UK.

The new Antarctica collection, comprising a dining table and coffee table made entirely of acrylic, is designed to resemble an enormous chiseled block of ice. The raw inner qualities of the capsule pieces are in stark contrast with their smooth surface finish. Each piece reflects the light in a way that alters its aesthetic appearance. Fredrikson Stallard describe this effect as 'painting with light'.

While the conceptual has always forefronted the functional in Fredrikson Stallard's designs, their manipulation of materials and play with appearance and texture continues to challenge the design binaries surrounding their practice: digital/analogue, synthetic/natural handmade/machined, function/form.

The exhibition is on for less than a month, so don't miss the opportunity to glimpse their most ambitious project yet.
