Shechter Underground, Somerset House

Ever the innovator, choreographer Hofesh Shechter creates Shechter Underground, a unique site-specific show beneath the august buildings of Somerset House

Appropriately named Shechter Underground, this show uses the very talented young dancers of Hofesh Shechter’s junior company, Shechter II, to lead audiences through a performance in the maze of underground tunnels and rooms beneath Somerset House.

Hofesh Shechter is known for his daring blend of Middle Eastern-inspired contemporary choreography and loud, pulsating drum-reliant rock music, creating works that somehow bring together tribal cohesion and a strongly anarchic element.

And so it will be with Shechter Underground, which is based on his hit show Clowns, recently seen at the Lyric Hammersmith. A macabre play of circus, comedy, murder and desire, Clowns has been adapted to respond directly to Somerset House’s historic setting.

A group of dancers will take audiences through spaces not normally open to the public; and if Shechter II’s shows at the Lyric Hammersmith earlier this year are anything to go by, the young dancers’ absolute engagement with their performance is likely to communicate itself to the audience, so that spectators will be inexorably drawn into the show.
