James Wilton Dance brings to life a struggle against sound judgement with Leviathan, an adaptation of Herman Melville’s epic novel Moby Dick

According to legend, the Leviathan was a fire-breathing sea monster of such size and ferocity that the water boiled when it swam near the surface. The word has become synonymous with any large wild creature, and its use as a title for this contemporary dance work amplifies the futile attempts to harness nature that underpin the tale of Moby Dick.
James Wilton’s reimagining of the literary classic pits Ahab, a ship’s captain, against the white whale Moby Dick, a deceptively beautiful beast that is as dangerous as the sea itself.
More than a simple re-enactment of the narrative, Leviathan uses movement to communicate Ahab’s ruthless aggression and introverted despair. Meanwhile, the abstracted force of Moby Dick is created through intense rolling, tumbling and driving motion.
Admirers of multi award-winning choreographer James Wilton’s trademark blend of athletic dance, martial arts, capoeira and partner-work are without doubt in for a whale of a time with Leviathan.
Seven performers take contemporary dance to new depths, conveying themes from the novel – man versus nature, isolation, obsession beyond reason – through a choreographic language bursting with unbridled energy.
Accompanied by a powerful electro-rock soundtrack by Lunatic Soul, Leviathan is daring, energetic, and sure to both evoke emotions and engage the intellect.
