BBC Four Dance Season - Street to Stage

The second of four close-up documentaries in BBC Four Dance Season, Street to Stage, focuses on the exciting young dancer Dickson Mbi

Dickson Mbi, From Street to Stage, BBC/Clearstory/Jonathan Olley
Dickson Mbi is a profoundly talented dancer, one who brings to the stage the kind of power and animal magnetism that creates memorable performances.

His roots lie in street dance; but he is slowly and surely moving into contemporary dance with breathtaking results, as was more than evident in his recent performances in choreographer Russell Maliphant's maliphantworks2.

Mbi is also trying his hand at choreography, skilfully blending the distinct, but complementary languages of street and contemporary dance. His choreography so far promises good things in the future.

The half-hour documentary Street to Stage follows Dickson Mbi’s progress, as he choreographs and perform his first contemporary dance solo under the watchful eyes of Akram Kahn’s producer, Farooq Chaudry.

This documentary is a revealing look into how a stage career develops from its beginnings in the street.
