Daniel Barenboim's West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, Royal Festival Hall

The gifted British cellist Jacqueline du Pré lives on in her landmark recording of the Elgar Cello Concerto and in the memories of older concert-goers. And although it is 30 years since her death, her name alone galvanises music-lovers, who have a special chance to remember her at a gala concert.

So popular was the announcement of the remarkable West-Eastern Divan Orchestra's appearance at Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall this October, that this second date has been announced. The musicians from Palestinian and Jewish backgrounds, conducted by du Pré's husband Daniel Barenboim, play Tchaikovsky's powerful Symphony No 5 – and a virtuoso piece for cello, of course.

The soloist in Strauss's colourful Don Quixote is the young Austrian-Persian cellist Kian Soltani. Don Quixote traces in music the crazy, fantastical life of the fanciful Spanish knight.

The afternoon concert will raise funds for research into multiple sclerosis, the disease which ended du Pré's brilliant career. She died in 1987, aged 42.

Barenboim and the academic Edward Said formed the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra to open dialogues between Israeli and Palestinian musicians. Under Barenboim’s leadership, the ensemble goes from strength to strength, and is often a big attraction at the BBC Proms, but this is its first appearance at Royal Festival Hall.

The emotional and musical power of this special orchestra and the occasion itself make this an event to catch, and tickets are selling fast.
