Espoir & Echo, Cadogan Hall
French composers take centre stage at this Bastille Day concert, alongside the giants of Italian song

The names of Fromental Halévy, Ferdinand Hérold and Daniel Auber may not be on everyone's lips when they think of favourite composers, but for singers the ravishing music they left is worth taking to a larger audience. And that's what two premier singers, the Canandian-Lebanese soprano Joyce El-Khoury and the exciting American tenor Michael Spyres will be doing when they join the great Hallé Orchestra in this rare London appearance.
El-Khoury took the Royal Opera House by storm last year as Violetta in Verdi's La Traviata and there is plenty more Italian music in this programme too. But the songs by Halévy, Hérold and Auber are the collector's items alongside dramatic pieces by Verdi again, Donizetti and Rossini.
El-Khoury and Spyres are shortly to release two recital discs of the same music, and this concert, like the CDs entitled Espoir & Écho, is a sneak preview of their recorded programme of miniature masterpieces on the innovative Opera Rara label. And concert-goers will be able to pick up the promising new discs straightaway, at the Cadogan Hall.
Between highlights from operas that include Lucia di Lammermoor, the Hallé, conducted by Carlo Rizzi, plays notable orchestral pieces, among them the overture to Auber's Manon Lescaut and the ballet music from Donizetti's La favorite.
Both these singers perform in the greatest opera houses in the world. To see them in this comfortable, small-scale venue will be a rare treat, and the audience is guaranteed to come away with heads full of song.
