Prom 50: Sir Andras Schiff plays Bach

The great pianist plays Bach's Goldberg Variations, among the seminal works for solo piano

Prom 50: Sir Andras Schiff plays Bach
Sir Andras Schiff is a colossus among pianists. Born in Budapest but now a resident British citizen, his performances and recordings of the core classical repertoire are among the most definitive. Few alive today can better convey the subtleties of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert, and even fewer have Schiff’s ability to make the audience feel part of a collaborative process.

As part of the BBC Proms 2015 late night Bach series, Schiff will play the most famous, and perhaps the very finest, of the baroque wonderworker’s solo keyboard works: The Goldberg Variations. Bach's thirty-one miniatures begin with an exquisite aria, whose bass line is then transformed into a series of bewilderingly diverse but always-sublime variations. Over the course of 70 minutes, they explore the full range of their instrument's expressivity. When Schiff performed six Bach recitals at Wigmore Hall in 2013, the reviews were astounding. There is little doubt that this performance will be equally remarkable.
