Mediaeval Baebes bring choral folklore to Covent Garden

In the atmospheric setting of St Paul’s Church, aka the Actors’ Church, ethereal choral group Mediaeval Baebes are performing a series of live concerts to mark their 25th anniversary as a band. Hosted by Iris Theatre, the concerts offer the chance to hear the group sing hits from their latest album Prayers of the Rosary, as well as the lead theme song to ITV show Victoria, for which the group received two Emmy nominations and a Royal Television Society award.

With the average lifespan of a band set at around two or three years, keeping various incarnations of Mediaeval Baebes together for a quarter of a century has been no mean feat by founder Katharine Blake, who formed the group back in 1996. As the story goes, it all began when Blake, then known as the lead singer-songwriter of avant-garde rock band Miranda Sex Garden, broke into a cemetery with a group of friends to sing together dressed as divine visions in flowing white gowns and crowns of ivy.

Since then, Mediaeval Baebes have enjoyed a bountiful career, producing 10 studio albums and performing their signature blend of lush, spiritual chants fused with folkloric storytelling around the world – tours which have taken them to the United States, Canada and Asia, as well as Europe. They’ve performed in numerous enchanting settings, including castles, caves, cathedrals and even for liberated festival-goers dipping a toe into spiritualism at Glastonbury.

Over the years, the group's work has earned them critical acclaim, including an Ivor Novello Award for their performance on the BBC’s The Virgin Queen. They’ve also performed with some of the biggest names in the music industry, including Jools Holland and Iggy Pop.

Book now to listen live and be swept up in the magic as Mediaeval Baebes weave together mediaeval and romantic texts, ancient choral traditions and folkloric mythology.
